July 20: Denali R and R

Tuesday July 20, Denali R and R: After our long Monday, it was good to just take a break and stay close to camp. I took the kids and we rode bikes to the visitor’s center for an unhurried look at the exhibits and a beautiful video that depicts a whole year in the park. Mark and Fei got booklets to fill out, in their quest for Junior Ranger badges. It seems to me that Junior Ranger badges require a lot more work than when I was a kid… but they both managed to get it done and find a ranger to swear them in. Meanwhile, John, Barb and Tom planned to hike to nearby Mount Healy, but settled for a much gentler walk. The Healy trail was temporarily closed due to bear - human encounters.

In the afternoon we had a look at the park’s sled dogs. They’re an energetic bunch of leggy Huskies - furry, friendly and used to lots of attention from strangers. In summer they amuse the crowds, get lots of pets, and show off their crazy enthusiasm for pulling when they’re hitched up to a sled on wheels. In winter they really work, providing the only way for rangers to get around the park other than on snowshoes or skis.
