Tuesday July13, Heading to Canada: Before leaving Haines, we toured the Hammer Museum. Who knew there could be so many types? And what better hobby for any Haines resident faced with 8 months of very wet winter every year? We stocked up on groceries, huge sea scallops and halibut; then headed northwest, leaving the ocean. A fine drizzle began and we crossed into British Columbia, shortly followed by “ta da!” the Yukon Territory! Yukon – it evokes all sorts of fantastic images of Jack London’s tales of men, dogs and wolves, of vast cold expanses, caribou, gold strikes and adventure. No wolves or caribou were to be seen from the highway but it was vast, wet and devoid of people. We uneventfully found our way to Haines Junction for the night.
Around 10PM, a guy pulled into the campsite next to us on his bike and set up a small tent. Marc was a college student from Calgary, on day 22 of his epic ride to Denali and Anchorage! He’d just done 100 miles, a long day, and gladly took the beer John offered. John and Marc traded tales of bike touring. Next day he pedaled off in the rain after sharing some coffee. Maybe we’ll see him again…
